Dr. Hedieh Mirahmadi encourages support of traditional Islamic schools

WASHINGTON, D.C. - On July 29, ISCA Public Affairs Director Hedieh Mirahmadi addressed a conference sponsored by the the United States Agency for International Development on the topic of "Strengthening Education in the Muslim World."

The seminar, held for USAID program managers and technical staff, was part of the agency's ongoing efforts to find more constructive ways to engage the Muslim world. Mirahmadi told the group that American support for education in Muslim nations world would show people there that this country wants to empower them, not defeat them. Such initiatives, she said would be "a tremendous gesture of goodwill" that would go a long way toward improving America's image in the Islamic world.

Referring to her recent travels in Indonesia and Malaysia, Mirahmadi said promoting traditional Islamic learning is a proven means of countering the recruitement efforts of militant extremists.
