The Congressional Pakistan Kashmir Caucus Agenda

The Pakistan and Indian border-region of Kashmir remains one of the most nuclear charged areas of the world.  Concerns for the ever-increasing instability of the region places a moral and social responsibility on all nations to search for a non-violent solution to the conflict.

Resolution of the sensitive, complex, and tragic circumstance for all Kashmiri’s is further prevented by negative stereotypes, which ultimately discourages international support for intervention in the conflict.

The most critical advancement that can be made towards peace in South Asia is to work towards a de-escalation of the violence and hostility between the people. Significant progress can be made towards that goal by focusing on ways to:

  • Decrease human rights violations, including the killing and torturing of innocent civilians
  • Improve the quality of life through educational opportunities and increasing economic productivity
  • De-militarize the region
  • Resolve the governance issues of the people of Kashmir

Dear Congressional Representative _____[insert name] _________,

I am part of a Muslim community in your district, which is very encouraged by the creation of the Pakistan Kashmir Caucus.  As you know, the threat of nuclear war, which could result between India and Pakistan, jeopardizes the sanctity of all human beings.

We therefore sincerely urge you to join Rep. Major Owens of New York in supporting peace and stability to the Indo-Pak region.  The resolution of the conflicts in South Asia, including the problem of gross human rights violations is of primary importance to our community.  We ask that you demonstrate your concern and join the Caucus.

                                                                                    Sincerely,
