Inheritance of Women
Q: Is it permitted for a Muslim family which has only girls and no boys, to will all their inheritance to them?
A: Allah swt has defined all rules of inheritance in the Holy Quran in a complete and detailed way. If a family has only one girl, she will inherit half. If they have two girls or more, the girls will inherit two-thirds. They cannot inherit more than that, even if the parents want to write more for them into the will – that would contravene Islamic law. What remains goes to the male relatives, if the family has no sons. If you have no boys, it is permitted to give your expected inheritance to your girls during your lifetime, including lands, farms, buildings, etc. and other things which are difficult to divide, but what is given them must remain in the range between ½ to 2/3rds with the remainder going to male near of kin from the family. For the parents to assign everything to the girls and not allow 1/3rd to go to the nearest male relatives of the family, is not acceptable according to Ahl as-Sunn wal-Jama`at. And Allah knows best.
