Understanding Islam, Extremism and the Politics of the Middle East

Globally-renowned Islamic scholar to visit Washington, DC

Warned of terrorist threat in 1999 at the US Department of State

(“We want to tell people to be careful, that something major might hit quickly….”)

“This was not only an attack on America, it was an attack on Islam, the Qur’an and on every Muslim.”
- Shaykh Muhammad Hisham Kabbani, ISCA Chairman, on The Today Show (9/17/01)

(Washington, DC – 9/26/01) – At the request of a number of government officials, Shaykh Muhammad Hisham Kabbani, ISCA Chairman, will visit Washington, DC next week (10/1 – 10/3), following a two-day stay in New York City (9/28 – 9/29). He will meet with numerous political and diplomatic figures to discuss the recent terrorist attacks, and provide Islamic expertise and insight into the current situation.

Shaykh Kabbani has advised key political figures for the past three years, since the inception of the Washington-based Islamic Supreme Council of America. On January 7, 1999, he addressed the US Department of State alongside the Honorable Congressman Dana Rohrabacher (CA) in an open forum entitled, “Islamic Extremism: A Viable Threat to US National Security.” At that time, the Shaykh addressed government officials and media representatives on the imminent danger to the US posed by Islamic extremists, saying:

The problem of extremism is a big danger, and it can be solved if the West better understands Islam and builds bridges with the moderate Muslims, the traditional Muslims. This way, the Muslim community will eliminate the extremist threat from within.”

Shaykh Kabbani is a prominent American citizen of Lebanese descent and holds a degree in Islamic Jurisprudence, which authorizes him to give fatwas, or legal rulings. He has authored several papers and reports on Jihad, the history and evolution of extremism, and radical Islamic groups (see www.islamicsupremecouncil.org). He is an expert in Islamic Law, extremism and Middle East politics.

Shaykh Kabbani is available for a limited number of interviews while in the DC and New York metropolitan areas. Recent media appearances include NPR, Fox News, CNN, MSNBC, The Today Show and many newspapers and radio talk shows in the Detroit area, where one of ISCA’s Islamic centers is located.
