JOB- Program Coordinator, Afghan Communicator, New York

POSITION AVAILABLE: PROGRAM COORDINATOR

Mission
Afghan Communicator (AC) is a community based, grass-root organization
dedicated to education, advocacy and youth leadership. AC's main focus
is the Afghan community and the Muslim community in New York. We also serve
the larger community in New York and the broader Afghan community.

History
AC was founded in August of 1997 as an academic, literary and cultural
magazine, by a group of young educated Afghans. Following September
11, 2001 our mission changed to include more community outreach and
grassroots work. We established an office in Flushing, Queens and
with the help of new staff laid the foundation of the new Afghan
Communicator. 80% of our work is concentrated in the Afghan community
in New York and the US. The remaining 20% of our work is dedicated to
helping people in need in Afghanistan. We are doing a number of
cultural, educational and humanitarian work throughout the year.

POSITION:
PROGRAM COORDINATOR (Full-Time)

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Include but not limited to:
* Coordinate AC projects to their completion
* Write final reports for funders
* Maintain a database for Afghans in NYC and Afghans abroad
* Maintain AC's filing system, answer phone calls, send mailings
* Take meeting minutes and maintain electronic files
* Attend some meetings on behalf of AC
* Assist with publication of Community Bulletin and AC Magazine

QUALIFICATIONS
BA. As this is an entry-level position, we are looking for someone
who is dedicated to not-for-profit work as a career. This is an ideal
position to start from and grow with a young, dedicated and friendly staff. We
will provide workshops to prepare you for the work involved.
Experience in advocacy, education, or related social work is helpful.
Excellent writing, analytical and organizing skills and knowledge of Afghanistan
and the Afghan community preferred. Social science background and experience with
public speaking, organizing and government relations is helpful.
Strong organizational, communication and computer skills (Word and
Microsoft Office) required as well as ability to work cooperatively with group.
Bi/multilingual ability preferred. Demonstrated ability to be
punctual, prioritize, handle multiple and complex tasks.

SALARY:
$10-12 per hour, depending on experience.

FELLOWSHIP- Europe and Islam - Emotions, Identities, Politics (Essen, Germany)

The Kulturwissenschaftliches Institut (KWI) im Wissenschaftszentrum
Nordrhein-Westfalen in Essen, Germany, invites applications for a one
and a half-year research fellowship to begin January 1, 2003. The
successful candidate will broaden an existing international research
project on "Europe: Emotions, Identities, Politics" led by Prof. Luisa Passerini.

The Central European and Eurasian Law Initiative (CEELI), a public
service project of the American Bar Association, is currently seeking
experienced attorneys for the following positions. Unless noted, the
positions are based in the capital city and require a twelve-month
commitment. The start dates are noted in parentheses.

CEELI considers attorneys for long-term positions with a minimum of
five years of legal experience, bar membership, high level of energy
and initiative, strong interpersonal skills, and demonstrated legal
expertise in the substantive area of the position. International experience and
foreign language skills are preferred, but not required. All participants
over 2 months receive a generous support package that covers travel,

Regional Human Rights Legal Specialist - Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan (1 year,
September 2002)
* Provide substantive expertise in the area of human rights to CEELI's
programs throughout Central Asia.
* Training to legal professional, law students and judges throughout
Central Asia on issues of Human Rights
* Develop and replicate human rights law training modules throughout
Central Asia
* Spearhead the creation of a network of trained courtroom monitors to
document HR violations in Kyrgyzstan
* Assist Tashkent based liaison and legal specialist in development of
Human Rights Law Clinic.
* Coordinate with other liaisons in the region as necessary.
* Human rights experience required.
* Legal education experience (preferred, but not required)

Curriculum Reform Legal Specialist - Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan (6 months,
Oct/Nov 2002)
* Assist in the review and reform of the current curriculum of the
Kyrgyz-American University and/or other interested law faculties.
* Work to strengthen and modernize the curriculum for legal education,
including development of courses on civil and criminal trial
advocacy, basic lawyering skills, legal research and writing, etc.
* Assist in the development of a mandatory ethics course.
* Introduce interactive teaching methods to legal education.
* Work with the Advocates Association of Kyrgyzstan (AAK) and the
Ministry of Education to develop and implement accreditation standardsfor legal
education in Kyrgyzstan.
* Prefer experience with legal curriculum development, extensive
experience with legal teaching, and experience in law school administration.

Judicial Legal Specialist - Almaty, Kazakhstan (Length and start date
TBD)
* Conduct targeted trainings on judicial ethics with the new Judicial
Training Center (JTC)
* Explore the JTC's interest in the development of a comprehensive module
on judicial ethics that can be made a part of all JTC trainings
* Explore opportunities to provide targeted trainings to Judicial Ethics
Commissions
* Work with the Commissions to develop an action plan for enforcement of
judicial ethics
* Provide assistance on other ethics-related topics
* Prefer experience with judicial ethics - code development, enforcement
and training.

Legal Education Legal Specialist - Tashkent, Uzbekistan
(3-4 months beginning Fall 2002)
* Assist in the reform of the current legal education system at Tashkent
State Law Institute and its satellite campus in Namangan.
* Responsibilities include developing and introducing a progressive legal
curriculum (including editing new legal textbooks), introducing and
providing training in innovative and interactive teaching techniques,
providing training and expertise on international treaties and
substantive areas of law, and organizing study tours for faculty members.
* Coordinate with the Human Rights Clinic Liaison in Tashkent, the
Bishkek-based Human Rights Legal Specialist, and the Tashkent-based
Legal Education Liaison and staff attorney.
* Experience with legal curriculum development
* Extensive experience with legal teaching
* Experience in law school administration

Clinical Legal Education Specialist - Georgia (3-4 months, starting
anytimebetween November 2002 and February 2003)
* Work with two or more of Georgia's leading law clinics (and their
branch offices)
* Develop their training program for law students, including:
(1) advising on procedures for selection of students
(2) developing a program which is uniform, with the inclusion of
specific activities that can be evaluated
(3) helping to develop training manuals
(4) developing evaluation procedures to document the work done by the
trainee and the quality of skills developed.

Gender Issues Legal Specialists - Serbia (June 2003), Russia
(September 2002), Armenia (Fall 2002)
* Conduct training workshops on domestic violence, sexual assault, and
trafficking for the purpose of prostitution.
* Develop training programs on gender related employment issues,
including sexual harassment and discrimination.
* Assist non-governmental and government organizations in legal literacy
initiatives relating to women's legal rights.
* Help to develop legal clinics to assist the victims of domestic
violence and gender discrimination.
* Provide guidance in the development and strengthening of women's bar
associations.
* Prefer experience with domestic violence prevention, solid
background in trafficking issues.
* For the Russia position, Russian language is a plus.

for developing new clinics; Work on the development of an ethics course and an advocacy

Focus will be on improving the skill level of law students, legal
professionals, and judges; Work with Advocates Association of
Kyrgyzstan(AAK) to provide training on substantive legal issues,

analysis, technical assistance for parliament and efforts to improve public
participation in the legislative process; Work with other
international organizations on the creation of a Judicial Training
Center and vet candidates to participate in CEELI Institute trainings;
Work with the Association of Judges of Tajikistan to provide judicial
ethics training; Coordinate regional and national moot court
competitions and provide advocacy skills trainings to participating

Work with the Student Bar Association to promote the organizational
sustainability and development; Promote the SBA's interaction with a
variety of legal professionals, and work with it in the development of a
Student's Bill of Rights for law schools; Work on moot court
competitions, including administering and organizing the competitions
and providing advocacy skills-building trainings; Coordinating the
establishment of an integrated Street Law program at Tashkent State

Identify advocates for participation in a Ferghana Valley network of

advocates in the network to identify and pursue advocacy work and activities for
