ISCA welcomes President Islam Karimov of Uzbekistan

(Washington, DC 03/12/02) It is with reverence and great pleasure that the Islamic Supreme Council of America (ISCA), its chairman Shaykh Muhammad Hisham Kabbani, and thousands of ISCA members around the country welcome His Excellency President Islam Karimov of Uzbekistan on his first official visit to the US. President Karimov will visit with President Bush today to discuss bilateral relations between the two countries and spheres of future cooperation.

For the past three years, ISCA has worked tirelessly to bolster understanding of Uzbek society here in the US, and to support their courageous stance against terrorism and violence committed in the name of religion. President Karimov has often been misunderstood for his vigilant posture against extremism; however, government officials and NGOs in the US are only now, after September 11, beginning to understand the dangers of the international terrorist network that the Uzbeks have faced for many years.

Among his many official engagements, President Karimov will be the Guest of Honor at a dinner reception hosted by the Uzbek-American Chamber of Commerce. The President will later continue to New York City where he will visit Ground Zero and conduct a meeting with Shaykh Kabbani.

Once again, ISCA warmly welcomes President Karimov and wishes him the utmost success for his country, his people, and his preservation of classical Islamic thought.
