ISCA endorses Wolfowitz statement in support of traditional Islam

(Washington, DC 03/12/02) The Islamic Supreme Council of America applauds the recent statement by Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz in which he asserted that support for traditional Muslims is the key to winning the war against terrorism [reported by Newsday, March 9, 2002].

This statement shows the administration understands the nuances of the war against terrorism and seeks to support traditional Islam and its adherents. This in turn demonstrates a clear realization that the majority of Muslims around the world, who follow the classical understanding of Islam, are
peaceful, moderate, law-abiding citizens of their nations, including those whose home is the United States.

Those who seek to create instability and spread terror are a small minority, whose beliefs are distinct from those of the majority of Muslims. Their immoderate beliefs stand in stark contrast to the vast majority of the world's estimated 1.5 billion Muslims, who hold a traditional, tolerant and
peaceful approach to the faith.

Therefore ISCA concurs with Mr. Wolfowitz's statement, "To win that war against terrorism, we have to reach out to the hundreds of millions of Muslims who believe in tolerance and moderation." We consider this the key to achieving an enduring victory against those who seek to deviate the faith towards their own political ends.
